Vocabulary is very important to reading comprehension. Readers cannot understand what they are reading without knowing what most of the words mean.
As children learn to read more advanced texts, they must learn the meaning of new words.

The ever changing student demographics of Americas schools include students of diverse linguistic, academic, and cultural backgrounds, restructuring efforts such as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of (IDEA, 1997) and the No Child Left Behind Education Act (NCLB, 2001) necessitate that teachers become skilled in delivering effective, research- based instruction to all students explicitly directed at reading instruction. Effective reading instruction begins with assessment.
STREaM believes that the most important skill a child will learn is how to read. To accommodate the diverse literacy backgrounds individual children come to the teaching and learning process with, the STREaM Tutor Professional Development program prepares tutors to become more diagnostic. STREaM does not assume that all students will learn to read the same way and that they will all benefit equally from classroom lessons and that is why we provide a research-based and data-driven supplemental education program.
While the Essential Literacy skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing are inherent to mathematics, science, technology, and social studies instruction, the emphasis is on teaching students mathematics, science, technology, and social studies.
